Helping to improve bicycle access to roadways and paths

Some of my wishes for riders in Stanislaus County are coming true!!  It is an exciting time to be watching it.  I hope you will help celebrate as we watch Share-the-Road signs going up in Stanislaus County.

SCBC has purchased signs and poles, etc. and the County will be placing them along roads (6 have been chosen as a start) as they do maintenance on those roads.  Hip, hip, horay at long last!

Thank you to Chuck & RJ (and others) who have represented us on the STANCOG Bicycle Advisory. They have been working on this for years.  Also, Ride for Mom donated $2,500 towards these signs and SCBC had set aside $4,000.  I can’t wait to see them on the roads!

Another milestone is the formation of a Modesto Bicycle Advisory group.  We meet with Mayor Marsh every other month.  One of our first priorities was to apply to the League of American Bicyclists for the designation of being a Bicycle Friendly Community.

I am proud to say that Modesto made Honorable Mention on our first application.  Not only that, but now the MBAC is working towards following the recommendations of the report from LAB and continuing to move Modesto towards an even better review in the future.

And now for exciting news on our Fruit Yard Century.  Linda Johnston, our chairperson, and all our committee are already working on making the FYC the BEST!  We have joined with The Chef’s Association to help raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank.

How would you like a chef to cook for you as you ride and know that as you had a fantastic ride, your money was going to help feed others in Stanislaus County?

Now we can RIDE TO EAT and RIDE TO HELP OTHERS EAT, too!  Help spread the news of the FYC and get all your friends to ride and choose their favorite chef and rest stop.  Top rest stop and chef will win a prize!  This will be a yummy ride!

This month, help is still needed at the Turlock Road Race on April 14 and Earth Day on April 20.  Also, the Bob Paris Ride on April 20 needs registration help. And on April 26 bike repair is needed at the Modesto Gospel Mission Open House.

Next month, make sure to mark your calendar for Ride-to-Work Day with the Mayor on FRIDAY, May 10.  Mayor Marsh will be at Plantation Coffee (Roselle & Floyd) at 7:15 a.m.  The ride will leave for downtown at 7:30.

Ride for Mom will be the next day, May 11 and I need volunteers for everything!  Let me know if you can help: president@stancobike.org

This is riding season & SCBC is BUSY! : )

Get a ride in, too!
