The Fruit Yard Century is coming next month!

We need volunteers and cookies! Let John Field (john_field@stancobike.org) know if you can help.

Modesto now has a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee! We will be meeting quarterly. Let Susan or Chuck Shoup know if you have anything you want to be brought up about cycling in Modesto.
At the start of this committee, we applied for designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. We’ll let you know how that turns out and what may be next on our list of imporvements for riding in Modesto.

As I wrote some of the anwers to the questions on the application, I was really excited about how much SCBC has helped to further this goal. We have become a great source for helping strengthen safe riding in and around Modesto.

Keep up the good work and thank you!

SCBC President

Moving the Fruit Yard Century up one month has us really working to make it the best! Thank you to everyone who has ridden a pre-ride and given us comments. We need all the help and input we can get! : )

This event is just a little over two months away and we will continute to need your help in the revised pre-ride and in volunteering for the Century. Save the date – September 8th!

Tahoe was absolutely perfect for riding, hiking and kayaking this year. You really should put this week on your calendar for next year – the week following Father’s Day. Thanks Jon P. for working so hard to make this trip happen.

I’m also looking forward to riding on the coast in August – a 4 day tour. Hope you can join us then or on one of the other fantastic rides scheduled. Jack & Dave E. are scheduling something for everyone so all levels can ride. Now get out there!

What a wonderful start to a New Year!

The New Year’s Day Ride was a huge success with about 100 people stopping to eat at Frank Raines Hall.

Thanks to Gary Vacarro, who kept us in warm scrambled eggs and blew the place clean before we left and to Chuck & John who greeted and organized.

As we start the new year, we are already looking forward to SCBC volunteer needs.  We will be involved in these community wide events to help support biking and a more healthy lifestyle.

Please mark your calendars and let me know if you can help:
March 18 – Modesto Marathon – ‘riding SAG’ people are needed
Apr. 21 – Earth Day – SCBC booth, handing out information
May 6 – Turlock Lake Road Race (CdV) – course marshals needed
May 12 – Ride for Mom & health fair – SCBC booth and all volunteer positions
(I’m the volunteer coordinator! : )
May ?? – Ride to Work Day – SCBC booth
May 19 – Family Cycling Event – crit, SCBC booth
May 20 – Modesto Road Race – course marshals

Have a great riding year!

Our holiday dinner at the Johnson’s was wonderful!  Thank you so much, Tim & Katy, for opening your home to us.

Earlier that morning, we had a fantastic turn-out for the Spirit of Giving Run & Ride. SCBC led a ride from 11th & M to the Dry Creek Trail with a snack stop at the Claus turn-around.  We had an amazing group of about 60 riders, mostly families, who had a cold but very nice morning.

Many thanks to the SCBC volunteers who made it all happen! I talked to several riders who thanked us for making this such a fun ride they could do with their families.  I loved seeing them enjoy it so much, too!

Are you new to bike riding, and/or, a new member of SCBC?

We want to help you “learn the ropes” and to meet and get to know you better.  If you have questions or just want to listen to others’ questions about bike riding, repair or equipment, we would like to be available to you at a special meeting to answer your questions.

If you need more information about our rides, routes, or how to get more involved, please join us at these orientations.  When: Three times this year (in Jan., April & Sept.) at 6:00, before the General Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.

Now, we turn our attention to our annual NEW YEAR’S DAY RIDE.  I have a couple of volunteers in the kitchen but I could use a couple more. Other than that, RIDE! I’ll see you at the top with a warm fire and breakfast burrito.

Happy Riding in the New Year,

Susan
