Bicycle month! What a busy but fun time!

Ride with Mayor Marsh on Friday, May 10 to downtown and enjoy treats with other riders at Ride to Work Day. The start is from Plantation Coffee on Floyd and Roselle At 7:15.

The next day, May 11, is Ride for Mom. If you are not riding, I need volunteers in several areas. Last year, RFM was a donor to our Share the Road signs, helping us purchase 42 signs! Please help support them again this year.

Later that week, Bike Week, is the Ride of Silence on May 15. This is a ride to remember bicyclists who have been injured or killed while riding. We still need a leader for this memorial ride. If you would like to choose a route and lead the ride, I can help. Let me know.

On Saturday, May 18, SCBC has a booth at the Family Cycling Event. I need riders willing to share bicycling information with others at our booth. Many of us also help with the Modesto Crit that same day and with the Modesto Road Race on Sunday. Working these events is a fun way to learn about them and to help spread the fun of cycling.

Join in!

Some of my wishes for riders in Stanislaus County are coming true!! It is an exciting time to be watching it. I hope you will help celebrate as we watch Share-the-Road signs going up in Stanislaus County.

SCBC has purchased signs and poles, etc. and the County will be placing them along roads (6 have been chosen as a start) as they do maintenance on those roads. Hip, hip, horay at long last!

Thank you to Chuck & RJ (and others) who have represented us on the STANCOG Bicycle Advisory. They have been working on this for years. Also, Ride for Mom donated $2,500 towards these signs and SCBC had set aside $4,000. I can’t wait to see them on the roads!

Another milestone is the formation of a Modesto Bicycle Advisory group. We meet with Mayor Marsh every other month. One of our first priorities was to apply to the League of American Bicyclists for the designation of being a Bicycle Friendly Community.

I am proud to say that Modesto made Honorable Mention on our first application. Not only that, but now the MBAC is working towards following the recommendations of the report from LAB and continuing to move Modesto towards an even better review in the future.

And now for exciting news on our Fruit Yard Century. Linda Johnston, our chairperson, and all our committee are already working on making the FYC the BEST! We have joined with The Chef’s Association to help raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank.

How would you like a chef to cook for you as you ride and know that as you had a fantastic ride, your money was going to help feed others in Stanislaus County?

Now we can RIDE TO EAT and RIDE TO HELP OTHERS EAT, too! Help spread the news of the FYC and get all your friends to ride and choose their favorite chef and rest stop. Top rest stop and chef will win a prize! This will be a yummy ride!

This month, help is still needed at the Turlock Road Race on April 14 and Earth Day on April 20. Also, the Bob Paris Ride on April 20 needs registration help. And on April 26 bike repair is needed at the Modesto Gospel Mission Open House.

Next month, make sure to mark your calendar for Ride-to-Work Day with the Mayor on FRIDAY, May 10. Mayor Marsh will be at Plantation Coffee (Roselle & Floyd) at 7:15 a.m. The ride will leave for downtown at 7:30.

Ride for Mom will be the next day, May 11 and I need volunteers for everything! Let me know if you can help: president@stancobike.org

This is riding season & SCBC is BUSY! : )

Get a ride in, too!

The official start to our Fruit Yard Century Planning Committee is this month. Although the Board has had many discussions regarding the FYC, now the new committee will take it over. Thank you so much for all our volunteers who are taking part in this committee. They have some wonderful new ideas and improvements that should make the FYC even better this year. I can’t wait to hear more of their planning.

It’s not too late if you want to join this FYC Planning Committee – the first meeting is Tuesday, March 5 at 6:30 at Linda Johnston’s house (in Ripon). The meetings will continue to be the first Tuesday of each month, until further notice. Come and join us!

SCBC is helping with the Modesto Marathon this month. I need about 10 riders to help ‘SAG’ the event, riding beside the runners and helping if needed. (Thank you, Brice, for being one of the 10!) The Marathon is Mar. 24 and I will need to have names soon for volunteers. Please e-mail me that you will ride that event – president@stancobike.org.

Also coming up is the Turlock Lake Road Race (April 14) and Earth Day (April 20). If you are interested in volunteering at either of these you can e-mail me and I will send your name on.

Get to that spring riding!

Wow! Taking over all the duties that Lynn Reeves used to do for our club has taken a lot of time! It will take about five of us to fill her shoes. If you know Lynn, please thank her for helping all these years (and thank John Field for financing that!)

And a special thank you goes to those five people who stepped up to help take over these duties, too. Very important: The Fruit Yard Century Organizing Committee is starting their meetings now. This is SCBC’s major fundraiser for the year. We are hoping to have meetings once a month, or as needed, to organize in all aspects of this event.

If you have ideas that you feel might make the Fruit Yard Century a better event, please help. You can make a difference in how successful our event becomes. We are hoping to involve as many club members as we can in this event. Think of ways you might be able to make a contribution, and then please consider joining the FYC Organizing Committee!

Spring riding is coming!

Thanks to our SCBC volunteers, we had another successful century!

We were pleased with the Fruit Yard Century and the venue. We just need more riders!

This month, we will be asking for help in planning for next year’s Fruit Yard Century. Would you consider being on a planning committee to help improve our major fund raiser? I know the talent we have in SCBC is broad. I’ve seen it in action. I look forward to seeing it used for the Fruit Yard Century this coming year.

The Modesto Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee is now meeting regularly. One of our first goals is to suggest placements of Share-the-Road signs, where striping might not be an option. If you have some suggested roads that you bicycle frequently, let me know and I can add them to the list.

Enjoy the Indian Summer as you ride,

We need volunteers and cookies! Let John Field (john_field@stancobike.org) know if you can help.

Modesto now has a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee! We will be meeting quarterly. Let Susan or Chuck Shoup know if you have anything you want to be brought up about cycling in Modesto.
At the start of this committee, we applied for designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. We’ll let you know how that turns out and what may be next on our list of imporvements for riding in Modesto.

As I wrote some of the anwers to the questions on the application, I was really excited about how much SCBC has helped to further this goal. We have become a great source for helping strengthen safe riding in and around Modesto.

Keep up the good work and thank you!
